‘Afternoon’ is a large horizontal oil on canvas painting created by Vietnamese artist Dang Xuan Hoa in 2011. Featuring a cold palette made of blue tones, typical of Dang’s production, the painting depicts an elongated figure, laying down backwards, in a position reminiscent of the Egyptian goddess Nut. The arms stretched out above the head, the figure is accented with small spheres that gently lead the eye to the blue sun dominating the sky in the upper section. The contrast between the subject, a person relaxing under the sun, and the cold blue tonality, creates a subtle tension that captures our attention. With its mesmerizing depiction and melancholic palette, this large oil on canvas horizontal painting will be a strong focal point in any home, whether placed above a sofa, mantel or console table. Unframed, the painting is signed lower left.
