‘Summer Time in Hanoi’ is a large framed oil on canvas Impressionist landscape painting of vertical format created by Vietnamese artist Le Thanh Son in 2012. Featuring an exquisite palette made of purple, pink, green and blue, the painting is filled with clear, bright colors. Our eye is immediately drawn to the three luscious trees that seem to voluntarily bend forward to provide some much-needed shade to the path on the right during this hot summer day in Vietnam’s capital. The vibrant colors of their leaves are perfectly contrasted by the dark tones of the sinuous trunks. The delicate interplay of light and shadow creates an intimate atmosphere that touches our senses deeply. The colors, responding to one another beautifully, are applied in petite impressionistic strokes that bring a sense of lightness to the ensemble. Son’s scene is infused with a sense of lighting unsurpassed by any other painter in Vietnam at the moment. Famous for his distinct impressionistic style, he produces here a canvas dedicated to the celebration of life.
