‘Enter Pagoda’ is a large figurative oil on canvas exterior painting created by Vietnamese artist Le Nhu Ha in 2011. Featuring a beautifully contrasting palette made of black, red, gold and white colors, the painting depicts the exterior façade of a Vietnamese pagoda, its upper section hidden by the shadow cast from its awning, while its lower section is bathed in the bright sun. Painted on a red background, traditional symbols accentuate the architecture. A single side chair, sitting on a paved ground, patiently waits for someone to sit on it. Le Nhu Ha is an experienced and exquisite artist. ‘Enter Pagoda’ contains immense detail and nuances between shadings of light and dark, sunlight and shadows. The majority of the colors in his works highlight a darker shade, which focuses the eye towards the more prominent brighter objects. Within the emphatic portion of his works, the subjects are composed of whites, reds and yellows. In Vietnamese culture, the color red often signifies good luck and is used to ward off evil spirits. Beyond the colors and objects, Ha’s unique perspective leads one into the subtle and mysterious depths of each painting, drawing upon his spirituality.
